Although the actual cause of the fire has not been confirmed, neighbouring residents said that the fire started at a warehouse next to the temple.

“I am very concerned that businesses in the Clairwood area are not being properly regulated. A business application does not necessarily mean that you have been granted authorisation to go ahead and run the business. We cannot afford to have flammable substances and chemicals stored at warehouses and business premises without the necessary safety regulations in place.

“Together with the DA Safety, Emergency and Security Committee, we will being going over to the warehouse that caught alight and along Sirdar Road to conduct an oversight visit, in a proactive approach to tackle this issue.  We will also engage with Metro Fire asking them to conduct regular inspections in the area. We have had too many incidents of fire in the South Durban Basin already. The safety of our residents in Clairwood is of utmost importance,” said Sewshanker.
