Amnstey period: Tend your unwanted firearm to the police

Surrendering your firearm during amnesty period will require you to complete and sign the necessary forms at your nearest police station, and you must insist on a copy of the SAPS 548 (Amnesty form). 

THE Minister of Police has declared a firearm amnesty period of six months which commenced on Sunday, 1 December and ends on Sunday, 31 May 2020, through the publication of a notice in the Government Gazette.

The amnesty period creates an opportunity for members of the public to surrender unwanted firearms or firearms they possess illegally, as well as ammunition and or firearm parts to the South African Police Service without fear of being prosecuted for the unlawful possession of this equipment.

The objectives of the amnesty period, are to reduce the large pool of illegal or unwanted firearms, ammunition and or firearm parts that are in circulation in the country.

Surrendering your firearm during amnesty period will require you to complete and sign the necessary forms at your nearest police station, and you must insist on a copy of the SAPS 548 (Amnesty form).

To obtain a competency certificate, you will need: two ID book copies, two colour passport photos, three character references of family members and two of friends (profoma to be collected from the designated firearm officer’s office).

Also required is a copy of training certificates, (that was first issued by the training institution), a copy of competency expired and a competency certificate that was issued by the SAPS.

For a firearm licence, you will need: two ID book copies, two colour passport photos, two photos of safe: one opened and one closed and a motivational letter.

If you are a firearm licence holder, there is no need for you to go to a gun training institution for training certificates. Those who no longer have the need to keep their firearms, must take them to the nearest police station for forfeiture.
