Quins up game from last week’s dissapointment

There is one round of league match cricket remaining for the first half of the current season. All teams aside from the fifth team will be active during the course of the upcoming weekend.

GOOD fortune was on the local boys’ side this weekend and saw Harlequin’s Cricket Club play a successful weekend of league cricket, contrary to last weekend’s clean sweep of defeats.

The first team took on Railways from Tongaat in a 50 over a side match at Harlequins 1 on Sunday, 1 December. The wicket was reasonable, but slower in the morning due to light rain in the dark hours of the early morning. The outfield was a little heavier than usual with moderate to slow ball velocity across the surface. Railways batsmen found the conditions difficult, but managed a below par tally of 145 runs, being dismissed in the 48th over. Quins fast bowlers performed well by virtue of Kevin Kettle who captured three wickets for 33 runs in 10 overs and George Bronkhorst who got a wicket for 29 runs in 10 overs.

Back up seamer Coetzee De Villiers provided good support in capturing one wicket for 34 runs in 8 overs. However, it was slow medium paced seamer Fayaz Safri who captured the wickets of three of railways middle order batsmen for just 17 runs in 7 overs who provided best support for the quick bowlers with his accurately directed deliveries. Mention must also be made of the contributions by Mohamed Patel with his off cutters, who conceded a run an over for seven overs and newly introduced slow right hand orthodox spinner Momadthala Motalha who captured a wicket for seven runs in 14 deliveries.

Sheldon Spindler successfully took two catches. George Bronkhorst took a catch at deep long on and was responsible for a great run out. Motalha fielded well by his standards also taking a high catch at deep long on.
Quins reached the set target of 145 runs by acquiring `146 runs for the loss of 2 wickets in 26 overs securing a victory with a bonus point. Quins first team is currently in the middle section of the promotion A log.

Quins second side played a scheduled 40 over division 2 match against Railways 2 at Harlequins 1. Harlequins 2 posted a total of 71 runs in 21, four overs. Kalvin Venter top scored with 17 runs, Daniel Smuts got a dozen runs and Darius Fourie scored one less than that. Best Bowler was right arm medium pacer Theuns Jacobs who bowled 6 overs for 15 runs taking three wickets. Quins 2 won by the narrowest margin of just seven runs.

The club’s U13 team played a scheduled 30 over a side youth league match on Sunday morning on the same field prior to the second teams match from 8:30am. The match was reduced to 20 overs as a consequence of the underlying condition of the outfield. Quins U13 scored 138 runs for seven wickets. Caleb Abrahams top scored with 28 runs. Cole de Klerk got 15 runs, Keenan oaks managed 13 runs and Aaduan Mohamed scored a dozen runs, Travis scored 11 runs. East Coast were restricted to 130 runs in their allocation of 20 overs. Cullen walker and Caleb Abrahams were Quins best bowlers taking a wicket each. Cullen Walker and Keenan Oaks executed spectacular run outs of opposition batsmen. Quins U13 won by eight runs.
