Wentworth Warriors is sporting team of the year

Six teams participated in the league and Wentworth Warriors were awarded the trophy for sporting team of the year.

SATURDAY’S sunny skies welcomed the much anticipated final tournament for the season of the girls’ development soccer league which began in July, at the Ogle Road Sports Ground in Wentworth.

Six teams participated in the league and Wentworth Warriors was awarded the trophy for sporting team of the year. The team’s coach, Carl Webster expressed his pride in the girls’ overall development throughout the season as a junior team. From a technical perspective, he said that the team showed had a strong defence and made a lot of good passes, especially during their game against Verity FC.

Wentworth Warriors’ Tyleez Ogle battles it out for the ball against her Sydenham Barnsley opponent, with her teammate Acelia Esterhuizen on standby.

“Their transition from defence to attack was the best I’ve seen them in a while and it just goes to show that the hard work has paid off. Winning the game 2-1 was a close call but the match was well played all in all.” Acelia Esterhuizen and Uyanda Blou displayed a strong attack at the opposition’s goal area and made some impressive shots. Seeing all of the girls play so well from July until now, when they couldn’t string the ball together or barely pass the ball, it is the best thing for a coach to see so much improvement,” said Carl.

Wentworth Warriors’ Amara Cassiem leads the pack with teammate Acelia Esterhuizen close by.

Wentworth Warriors also took on Sydenham Barnsley FC at the season finale in a more heated game with a more competitive and physically bigger opposition. The team suffered a few unforeseen blows on the field but maintained their momentum and team spirit throughout the game. The win was however, to Sydenham Barnsley with a score of 2-0.

This is the start of many more seasons and Carl hopes that more teams will join the league next year and give girls the opportunity to develop and show their skills. “Hopefully we can get one of the girls playing for Banyana Banyana one day,” said an optimistic Carl.
