What a week it was at Wentworth Bowling Club.

Amidst the excitement and fervour that contributed to the World Cup rugby final and the Springbok’s resounding victory, some gripping games were contested on the greens. The final of the Roley Taylor pairs competition developed into a humdinger battle as Brian Smith and Maree Sadie clashed with Brad Claassens and Jay Retief in a game that saw both sides have their turn taking and lead and peeling three times during the match. As the players took to the mat for the final end, Brian and Maree were two shots up on their opposition, but after 12 bowls had been delivered, Brad and Jay were holding two shots to draw level and force an extra end. With his second to last bowl, Brian played the perfect draw shot through the bowls in the head to land alongside the jack for shot, giving him and Maree the game and the title of mixed pairs champions for 2019.

The WBC trio of novices, Llewellyn Scrooby, Vic McCreanor and Ruth Petzer, having fought through the field to reach the final of the Grace Hare trips competition faced off against Godfrey Addinall, Trystan Lassak and Maree Sadie in a game that had spectators glued to their seats. Taking an early lead Godfrey and team put 11 shots on the score board before the novices gained a shot.

The determination of the novices kicked into action and they rallied together to slowly pile on the shots. At the end of the mandatory 18 ends, Godfrey and Co. were only three shots in the lead, giving them the title of mixed trips champions for 2019.

Rapidly improving new bowler, Trudi Rautenbach teamed up with Johnny ‘Mooiman’ du Plessis for Thursday evening’s bowls to notch up a resounding win and take home the apple tarts baked and donated by Amelia and Wayne Booysen. This casual event is an attempt to attract new bowlers to the try their hand at the game and is an open invitation to anyone wishing to try their hand at lawn bowls. Play starts at 6pm.

After an early start in the Grand Rapid Spur Big Jim pairs on Sunday morning, 3 November, it was Spider Williams and Rob Armstrong who stamped their authority on the competition to take home the first prize ahead of the father and son team of Kevin and Brad Claassens. The club’s newest ‘baby’ bowler, 14 year-old, MacKenzie Garland teamed up with her granddad, Simon, and leading with some remarkable drawing shots won the second session prize. The 60/40 board was won by Tatum Brown.

Visitors, Shaun and Julie Sutherland, playing in Wednesday’s Grand Rapid Spur any pairs competition played two outstanding games to take top spot with a 4+18 win ahead of Norman Webster and Colin Howes who managed a 4+8. The second session prize was pocketed by Brian Smith and Herbie Roux.

Notwithstanding the dismal weather a group of diehards turned up for the Wentworth breakfast trips on Thursday morning, 31 October and enjoyed the delicious breakfast pies from Fred’s Kitchen before play. Norman Moore, Derek Stevens and Claude Newman proved too strong for their opposition and took home the first prize. In second place were Graham Bransby, Brian Smith and Norman Webster who finished six shots behind the leaders. The second session prize went to Chad Wilson, Phil Hill and Russell Fuller. Russell and Graham added to their day’s winnings when they scooped the booty from the 60/40 board.

Members are reminded of the Club’s annual general meeting on Saturday, 9 November at 1pm. The AGM will be followed by the prize-giving.

Members are urged to attend these to ensure they have a say in the club’s leadership for next year and acknowledge the bowlers who have achieved champion status in 2019.
