Brighton Beach police spread awareness on gun violence

A brochure, researched and developed by Brighton Beach communications officer, Captain Louise Le Roux, was distributed by herself, Captain Tremaine Wood and Constable Mlulekie Sabelo during a two hour crime awareness campaign.

OPERATIONS held at Hill Side Mall and Bluff Towers Mall established a platform for police officers to create awareness on gun violence on Tuesday, 29 October.

A brochure, researched and developed by Brighton Beach communications officer, Captain Louise Le Roux, was distributed by herself, Captain Tremaine Wood and Constable Mlulekie Sabelo during a two hour crime awareness campaign.

“A person will automatically be declared unfit to possess a firearm if he or she has been convicted in court for any offence involving violence or sexual abuse, among others. Included in the brochure were other conditions under which a person can be declared unfit to possess a firearm. These include that police can declare a firearm owner unfit to possess a firearm if a final protection order in terms of the Domestic Violence Act, 1998 has been issued against him or her or if the owner has threatened to kill or injure themselves or another person by means of a firearm or any other dangerous weapon. To enable the police to start an investigation in order to declare a person unfit to possess a firearm, the police require a statement under oath from a witness,” said Le Roux.

During the operation community members and visitors at the mall were encouraged to report those who are in possession of and are trading illegally in firearms, by using the crime stop tip-off number on 08600 10111 or the on the SMS hotline 32211 or alternatively on the website www.crimeline.co.za. “These numbers may also be used to report gun owners who use their legal firearms in an unlawful manner. “Brighton Beach SAPS acknowledges the police officers who campaigned against gun violence on the day, which contributed towards the organisations strategic objective to create safer communities,” said Le Roux.

Other conditions highlighted in the brochure state that a person is unfit to possess a firearm if:

– He or she is mentally unstable, displays violent behaviour or is dependent on any substance such as drugs or alcohol.

– He or she abuses alcohol or drugs or is involved in dealing with drugs.

– He or she does not store the firearm in a safe place.

– He or she provides false information in order to obtain a firearm.
