Bluff karatekas win gold

The talented team competed in traditional kata, traditional kumite and creative kata.

JUNIOR karatekas from the Funakoshi Karate International (FKI) Bluff Dojo aimed to chop gold and did just that at the Full Contact Martial Arts (FCMA) Tebbutt’s Academy Tournament held on 25 and 26 October, at Primrose Wrestling Club in Primrose, Germiston.

Kiara Pieters, Lucas Ntomo, Emily Olwage and Shawn May who qualified for the KZN development team, displayed impressive martial arts skills, applying all that they have been taught by their instructor Shaun Miln, at the national tournament. The team competed in traditional kata, traditional kumite and creative kata.

Kiara Pieters, Lucas Ntomo, Emily Olwage and Shawn May showcase their awards and trophies received at the FCMA Tebbutt’s Academy Tournament.

Kiara received gold for creative forms, gold for traditional Kata and gold for traditional kumite. Lucas received gold for creative forms, gold for traditional kata and silver for traditional kumite. Emily received gold for creative forms, silver for traditional kata and bronze for traditional kumite. Shawn received gold for creative forms.

The group’s commendable performance follows in the footsteps of their black belt champ instructor Shaun, who together with his sidekick and daughter Abigail Sueltz also competed at the tournament winning gold for creative forms, gold for traditional kata, bronze for traditional kumite, gold for titles breaking as well as gold for creative forms, silver for traditional kata, gold for traditional kumite, gold for the best champ of champs, respectively.

Shaun Miln and daughter Abigail Sueltz competed at the tournament winning gold for creative forms, gold for traditional kata, bronze for traditional kumite, gold for titles breaking as well as gold for creative forms, silver for traditional kata, gold for traditional kumite and gold for the best champ of champs, respectively.

Shaun said that the tournament went smoothly and was a great success. “I am overjoyed and so proud to see how all the training has paid off. They have all grown and gone from strength to strength. Now I want them to keep this momentum so that they can continue to progress and excel next year. They are also a prime example of what this dojo has to offer to other children who may be interested in martial arts regardless of their backgrounds,” he said, expressing his pride in his junior development team and Abigail while encouraging more youngsters to join the sport.

“Big thanks to Shihan Carl Webster for all your guidance, time, knowledge and the time you take to empower others. Thank you to the parents for their time and effort. To all the parents of KZN development teams who came with us, a big thank you,” said Shaun on behalf of the FKI Bluff team.
