More Sass Less Trash’s (moresass_lesstrash) Michelle Lang (23) shared her super simple and natural recipe for a home-made toothpaste. The best part: it’s chemical and plastic-free!

Michelle explained that two of the easiest zero-waste swaps you can make in your home is making your own home-made, package-free toothpaste and the second is to buy and use bamboo toothbrushes instead of the usual plastic ones.
“Toothpaste has many cancer causing ingredients, specifically the foaming agent,” explained Michelle. “Creating your own toothpaste is an easy way to avoid all the plastic as well as any health threats that could be posed. I have been using a bamboo toothbrush for a little over a year now. Did you know that over 30 million plastic toothbrushes are sent to a landfill ever year in South Africa? These tooth brushes will out live you and your children.”
What you will need:
- 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
- 1 heaped tbsp organic coconut oil (whitens teeth, kills oral bacteria causing infection and bad breath)
- 1 tbsp organic activated charcoal powder (whitens teeth and promotes good oral health) Read also: Top 10 benefits of using activated charcoal
- A few drops of organic peppermint oil (for minty freshness)
- 1 tsp xylitol (for sweetness – optional)
Michelle’s tip: If the weather is hot and the coconut oil melts to a liquid, just pop it in the fridge.
Method:
Mix all the above ingredients together and store in a tightly sealed glass jar.
