Bluff Army support base adopts a spot

"We are really keen on keeping the Bluff clean and beautifying the gem that the area is," said Lt-Col Deon le Roux.

THE ARMY Support Base KZN located on the Bluff is the latest to add its name to the growing list of individuals and entities to Adopt-a-Spot. In response to the call by eThekwini Municipality for residents to take ownership of spots that are illegally dumped on or abandoned, the local army made its adoption official on Tuesday, 15 October when Lt-Col Deon le Roux signed the memorandum of agreement with city officials.

“This is a good start for us even though it is just a small area, we think it is important. We are really keen on keeping the Bluff clean and beautifying the gem that the area is. We are new to this programme but we are fast learners,” said Lt-Col Le Roux.

Capt Roanna Moodley, S/Sgt Thembikile Gwala, L/Cpl Vukile Mqhakama, Charles Leaven of ward 66, Kolin Citera of eThekwini Municipality, Lt-Col Deon le Roux, Preston Chetty of DSW, WO1 Bernand Jili and Maj Musa Nhlumayo.

Preston Chetty of DSW said waste minimisation education is instrumental in rolling out the Adopt-a-Spot programme especially in ward 66. “The programme is aimed at instilling a sense of care and responsibility for the natural environmental by adopting it. In many cases illegal dump sites are adopted and converted in pristine natural environments. The focus again, to encourage to residents take ownership of the natural environment through action based behavior such as Adopt-a-Spot programme,” he said.

Chairperson of the ward 66 CPF youth desk, Charles Leaven, said the Adopt-a-Spot programme is a good mechanism for the community to look after the area to take the pressure off the municipality. “Local residents and stakeholders can take ownership of local parks and make them feel that they’re contributing to the environment to make it safer and cleaner and we encourage for other people to do the same,” he said.

“I think that this is wonderful initiative by the Bluff Military Base in terms of beautifying its interest to the base itself. Also taking the consideration that the Bluff has been awarded the International Whale Heritage Site, this is another feather in the cap for the Bluff and I think this initiative will set the benchmark and hopefully will be the trendsetter to other businesses and residents,” said Kollin Citera of eThekwini Municipality.
