Ward 66 parks improved for safety and leisure

The parks will be tailored to meet the needs of specific communities with the addition of items such as wooden jungle gyms, cradle swings, adult swings, benches and security lights.

FOURTEEN parks in ward 66 are set to be upgraded. The remainder of the 2019/20 financial year will focus on either improving or upgrading the local parks which include Fynnlands, Bayview and the Bluff Showgrounds. According to the ward councillor, JP Prinsloo, the primary focus of the upgrades are to improve safety within these areas.

“By doing so spaces where community members and their families can come together are created. Clearing of alien invasive plants, pruning of trees and repairing old fences will be a priority through this project. Making these parks attractive to families and children will be key to the success of the project. We have requested several pieces of play equipment and other items for each of the parks. Each park will be designed to the needs of the community surrounding these parks and the size of the park,” said Prinsloo.

These tailor-made parks may include items such as wooden jungle gyms, cradle swings, adult swings, round turning plates, seesaws, domes, benches and security lights. “In the long-term we aim to install an outdoor community gym in each of the six suburbs within ward 66. Starting with the first outdoor gym being installed in Wentworth on the corner of St Patricks and Wentworth Roads,” he added.

Parks and Recreation Department has already conducted and scheduled work for each of these parks. The Bluff Showgrounds was among the first lot to get rejuvenated where old posts and rails were removed as part of the project. Prinsloo said that there was no guarantee that each of the parks will receive the identified items but they work needed to be implemented on a set budget to ensure that the best outcome is achieved.

“It will be a long road until we achieve every goal set out during this project but we are determined to meet every single one of them but together we can build a community we can all be proud of,” added Prinsloo.

Residents surrounding any of these parks are invited to partner with the councillor’s office and the Parks and Recreation Department on this project can call 031-467-0056 Monday to Friday from 8:30am – 2:30pm or email bluffservicedelivery@gmail.com
