Use alternative security measures [LETTER]

It is clear to me that even though anyone can buy a pit bull, not everyone should own a pit bull.

EDITOR – I am a resident of Yellowwood Park for over 15 years and I have begun to notice a very disturbing trend.

As crime rates increase in the area, so has the number of properties with large breed, defense orientated dogs and pets. Unfortunately, many of the owners of these pets do not have experience in managing a large dog and these pets escape into the road and are becoming a danger to runners.

It is clear to me that even though anyone can buy a pit bull, not everyone should own a pit bull. About 15 years ago the owners of these dogs used to be former SANDF and SAPS K9 members and today you find someone owning a boerboel as a first dog.

I urge people who are inexperienced in large breed dogs to avoid buying them and to try alternative means of protection. I also feel that as the local community we should look at prescribing measures within our wards before a property owner can purchase a large breed dog.
