Help Bluff Rescue Kennels secure funds

Amanda Herschel and some of the volunteers have been keeping stray dogs from roaming about in the streets since 2014.

EVERY donation tallies up to something, no matter how big or small is what the founder of the Bluff Rescue Kennels, Amanda Herschel, believes. Just as she believes that the dog shelter will successfully register as a non-profit organisation through the help of the public’s generosity.

“Everything we have here at the kennels was donated by companies and people. We are not registered as an NPO as yet, we are in the process of doing so but it costs a lot of money. We rely on the public to help us with money,” said the self-confessed dog lover. “We need more volunteers because at the moment it’s me and two other volunteers, we are here two hours every morning and again in the afternoon. We all work, we have got our own jobs and families. Nobody gets paid for anything that we do here, it’s for the love of the dogs.”

The dream of building kennels was realised last year when Amanda’s employers at the Bluff Eco Park approved her idea and business proposal. This meant that dogs could be kept for as long as they have to until they get homed.”Our kennels are big and very open. The problem with small spaces is that the dogs start developing what’s called kennel stress. When we built the kennels here we tried to keep them as open as possible so that the dogs don’t get the feeling of being in a cage. They can see and interact with other dogs, that was our whole aim.”

Maintaining the kennels and dogs is an ongoing task and Amanda appeals for whatever assistance that she can get at the Bluff Rescue Kennels, be it voluntary or monetary.

To help secure the much-needed funds, the dog shelter is hosting a karaoke evening at the Bluff National Park Golf Course on Saturday, 9 November from 6pm. Tickets are on sale for R100 each which includes a curry and rice meal.
