Fitness programme to uplift Wentworth youth

"I do this for the love of the game, to see my community grow and to see the raw and rising talent in the children that we have," said coach Gwendoline Sookool.

A FRIDAY fitness movement has begun at Wentworth Secondary School. Intended to get the learners active, the movement is a pilot project which instructor, Gwendoline Sookool of Skylarke Goal Line Club, hopes to spread across Wentworth for the youth.
On Friday, 4 October, learners did a range of exercises such as Tae Bo, Zumba, soccer and hockey including the introduction to French cricket, modified hockey and the latest workout craze, insanity.

Coach Gwendoline Sookool leads learners in aerobics.

“Working with the community in Wentworth is really needed especially with our children. We want them to come out and play different sets of sports codes. I do this for the love of the game, to see my community grow and to see the raw and rising talent in the children that we have. I’ve played sports since I was a child and I enjoyed it so much, I want to share that with the community,” said Gwendoline, who is affectionately known as Aunty Gwen.

Phillip Woodroffe teaches his learners a strategic way to head a soccer ball.

Phillip Woodroffe works alongside Gwen bringing in his wealth of knowledge as a technical soccer coach. “It’s important for me to firstly fully demonstrate and participate in soccer skills development drills that professional soccer clubs use to identify young talent. The training programme which I share allows all junior players to develop and maximise their full sporting potential. Their desire to succeed motivates them in active competition,” said the former soccer professional.
Phillip’s focus with the training is hand and eye coordination ball skills and he imparts the power of self-belief and the fundamentals of soccer training with his learners. “I aspired to achieve greatness through soccer as all I wanted to do is become a role model to youngsters in the township giving them better options in life,” he added.
