Evening bowls kick off at Wentworth Bowling Club

WBC will host evening bowls every Thursday, starting at 6pm on Thursday, 17 October

The promotion and development bowls played on Wednesday afternoon, 9 October, at Wentworth Bowling Club proved successful for Ruth Petzer who teamed up with new club member, Mike Hough, and Des Hardman to take top spot in one of the biggest fields the initiative has hosted this year.

There have been numerous requests to hold open bowls later than the 2.30pm slot on a Wednesday and the club is now able to oblige. Following the installation of lights at the club, WBC will host evening bowls every Thursday, starting at 6pm on Thursday, 17 October. Bowls are available for newcomers who would like to attempt the game. The community is invited to pop down after work to enjoy a bite from Fred’s Kitchen and join in the fun of a game of bowls.

Dave le Roux, Colin Howes and new club member, Wayne Booysen, accumulated a score of +13 at Friday’s Tomasina’s Men’s Casual Bowls to take the top spot for the morning. In second place, six shots behind were Arnie Harper, Robbie Carr and Ben Venter with Tom Cloete, Harvey Simpkins and Jacques Hais taking home the sportsman’s prize. Maria Cavanagh won the raffled leg of pork and Russell Fuller and Dave Carroll shared the spoils from the 60/40 board.

On Sunday, 13 October, the annual Wentworth vs Bluff challenge was contested between six men’s sides and three women’s sides from each club.

The men’s competition went to the wire when each club ended the morning’s play with three wins, leaving the decision to be made on a count out on points. The Bluff came out victorious with a nine shot advantage.

The Bluff women’s team won two of the three games to reclaim the teddy bear for 2019. Games were played in the true spirit of sportsmanship and the sense of camaraderie was tangible throughout the morning.

The committee and members of WBC congratulate Jay Retief on her selection to represent Port Natal Bowls in the president’s side for 2019. Jay’s hard work and dedication to practice has paid dividends and the club wishes her team success in the forthcoming tournament.

Dirk Venter and Albert van Niekerk have been discharged from hospital and are wished speedy recoveries on the road to good health.
