Ward 68 traders empowered at business expo

The event was made possible by eThekwini Business Unit.

ECONOMIC empowerment was the order of the day at a business expo hosted recently at the Austerville Community Hall in Wentworth. Small business owners were enlightened with information that would enable them to be better at their trade and see their businesses grow.

According to one of the guest speakers, Nosizwe Mbunquka from Business Support, the event was well attended and questions posed were relevant which proved that people were absorbing the information being given. Her delivery focused on programmes and opportunities offered by Business Support which included explaining the role of the Durban Business Fair.

“We encourage small-time entrepreneurs to get permits before trading informally and to get a business license before preparing and selling food. When your business makes money, ensure that you pay tax because you will never run away from SARS,” she said.

AndrĂ© de Bruin, who was also a guest speaker said that people needed to move away from the poverty mentality. “For too long our people were blocked from economic empowerment. A lot of our people now want to start businesses but have no idea and this workshop empowered them with procedures on how to start, comply, apply for tenders also how to be on the council, provincial and national treasury. And the feedback we got was very positive which proved that they are hungry for economic empowerment.”

He said that the next workshop will focus on drafting a business plan and company profile with dates soon to be announced. “A big thank you to eThekwini Business Unit and councillor, Aubrey Snyman,” he added.

The event was made possible by eThekwini Business Unit which seeks to distribute co-operative business support services to existing and potential businesses in eThekwini, enabling them to undertake income-generated activities resulting in job creation and economic growth.
