UPDATE: Teacher dies in horrific Merebank accident

A case of culpable homicide is being investigated by Wentworth police.

A TEACHER has died following the horrific accident involving a 70ton crane that rolled off a truck and crashed into three Quantum minibuses and a VW Polo on Himalayas Drive, Merebank in the early hours of this morning.

According Wentworth police communications officer, Captain Mbuso Gumede, a heavy duty truck was pulling a trailer loaded with a heavy duty crane.

“While driving on the road, going uphill, the trailer broke loose from the truck and crashed into three taxis and a polo. The crane fork, tyres and steel parts crashed into two taxi roof tops entrapping a driver and a female passenger in the front seat.

“The other victim, a woman aged 40, died at the scene,” he said.

Emergency unit, ambulance services and rescue teams were on scene to remove the driver and the rest of the passengers from the wreckage.

Two patients who were severely trapped were removed by emergency rescue services and ambulance services. “Jaws of life had to be used to free the driver, deceased passenger and another passenger. The taxis were damaged extensively by the crane and a trailer.
“Wentworth SAPS Vispol Unit and Detectives as well as Durban Central collision unit were also in attendance.

“The taxis were from Empangeni, North Coast and were transporting learners who were accompanied by teachers on tour to Durban. The deceased is a teacher from Empangeni. The deceased’s body has been taken to Gale Street government mortuary,” explained Gumede.

A case of culpable homicide is being investigated by Wentworth police. The vehicles were towed from scene.
