FOLLOWING weeks of vigorous training and stiff competition against some of Durban’s most promising young talent, five Wentworth boys have been selected to compete and represent Durban at the VW Junior Masters tournament which will be held in Johannesburg from 5 to 7 December.

Shaye Moody is one of the five Wentworth boys selected to compete at the upcoming national VW Junior Masters tournament in Johannesburg.

The VW Junior Masters tournament is a bi-annual youth soccer event, where teams representing various Volkswagen dealerships vie for a chance to compete at international level. Teams are selected by the dealerships they represent and U12s Shaye Moody, Landon Peterson, Brooklyn Goodman, Teval Hayes and Dillyn Wagner will be representing Volkswagen Umhlanga.
Play Fair Sports Development (PFSD) founder and local soccer coach, Kerwin Jacks said that he was approached by the owner of SuperSport Soccer Schools about the tournament. “He had seen that our community had some good players and asked us to assist in finding players to play for VW Umhlanga team at the VW Junior Masters tournament. The boys underwent further training, trials and matches in Durban North during the past week and we found some good quality players. Five of them are our local boys who are now part of a team of 14 players who will head to Johannesburg,” he said.

Kerwin will also assist the team as a coach and head to Johannesburg with the boys. The tournament will be completely funded by Volkswagen. During the national tournament, the boys could further secure a spot at the prestigious international Gothia Cup in Sweden next year where they will represent VW South Africa.

Landon Petersen is one of the five Wentworth boys selected to compete at the upcoming national VW Junior Masters tournament in Johannesburg.
“I didn’t limit my role in the selection process to just one local team, but rather opened the opportunity up to the rest of the community and soccer clubs through PFSD and called on talented soccer players to try out. The whole objective is to find talent and develop it so that these players can compete on a world-class platform. It’s a very exciting experience. I’m proud of these boys and I have great faith in their potential,” said a proud Kerwin.
