Fynnland Primary learner tops district quiz comp

Jenna Kisten, dominated at all four rounds of the competition, correctly answering questions posed to her and walking away as the clear winner of district six.

FYNNLAND Primary School learner, Jenna Kisten, rose above nine other quiz contestants to earn her spot as the winner of district six eThekwini Libraries Quiz Competition held at Grosvenor library on Wednesday, 15 August.

The competition forms part of the One City One Book campaign which is an initiative of the Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit that is aimed at cultivating and promoting the culture of reading among the residents of eThekwini.

“I’m really happy but I still can’t believe I won,” said the Grade 7 learner. She will be joined by runner up, Sthabile Hlongwane from Gokul Primary School at the interdistrict finals which will be announced soon.

Coinciding with Women’s Month, the all-girl contestants fought harder and harder to earn their keep, resulting in tie-breaking questions at the end of each round.

“Having all girls was just a coincidence, there was no gender preference in these competitions and we take whatever learners we are given by schools. I guess girls are more proactive with reading,” laughed Havenside librarian, Ayanda Mbhele.

Each learner earned their spot at the district round from their respective branch competitions.  To prepare for this round, they were tasked with reading two books in addition to brushing up on their general knowledge skills.

“Quiz books are usually derived from different concepts and issues that are current at that particular time. The Promise is a book about drug abuse and Reclaiming the Soil is a book about a black girl’s struggle to find her African self,” Ayanda added.

Fynnland Primary School principal, Ronnie Badripersad is pictured with Grade 7 learner, Jenna Kisten, receiving the next book she’ll be quizzed on at the inter-district competition from Somikazi Bonani and Nkanyiso Mteshane from eThekwini Municipality.
