It’s a family affair for WBC winners

Play begins at 1.30pm on Saturday, 27 July

A busy week at Wentworth Bowling Club saw two trips competitions being played to final stage.

Congratulations to Simon and Troy Garland who teamed up with Kearan Lassak to take the 2019 drawn trips championship. The nominated trips final was a family affair when Simon and Troy and cousin, Brad Claassens, proved too strong for their opposition and won through to claim that title.

The coming weekend heralds the final of the men’s drawn fours championship which will be contested by Brian Smith’s side comprising Robin de Gouveia, Dave Carroll and Moses Nuba when they face off against Luvuyo Ndava who will skip Norman Webster, Helmut Brutti and Albert van Niekerk in an attempt to win champion status. Play begins at 1.30pm on Saturday, 27 July.

The promotion and development bowls played on Wednesday afternoon, 17 July, was won by Norman Webster, Wayne Booysens and Marc Linkerman. The field of contestants grows every Wednesday and the community is encouraged to try their hand at the game of lawn bowls by registering at 2pm or contacting Margaret Walters on 082-961-8538 for further details.

The tea break in Tomasina’s men’s casual bowls on Friday, 19 July, proved to be a turning point for Colin Howes and Frank Gielink who came back from a substantial deficit to take the top spot for the morning. Tom Cloete, Errol Pienaar and Ben Venter finished in second spot, two shots behind the leaders. The week’s sportsmen’s prize went to Brian Smith, Phil Hill and John Minnaar.

Proving that anything can happen on a bowling green, play was delayed on Friday, 19 July, when John Minnaar’s wheelchair had a blow out. This message goes out to John: Three disabled bowlers (a blind man, an amputee, and a guy in a wheelchair) are flying back with the South African team from the Paralympics in the Middle East when their plane crashes in the Sahara Desert. The three bowlers (the only survivors) are now stranded and wait for someone to rescue them, but no one showed. They start to get really thirsty and decide to seek out water. The amputee leads the way, with the blind man pushing the guy in the wheelchair and eventually they find an oasis. The amputee goes into the water first, cools himself down, drinks a load of water, walks out the other side and lo and behold, he has a new leg! He gets excited and encourages his friends to do the same. The blind man offers to push the guy in the wheelchair, but he is refused because the guy in the chair wants to be mister independent and insists the blind man goes ahead of him. So he goes into the water, cools himself down, drinks a load of water, walks out the other side and lo and behold, he can see! Now the guy in the wheelchair’s getting really excited, starts pushing with all his might, goes into the water, cools himself down, drinks a load of water, and wheels himself out the other side. Lo and behold, new tyres!

Bowlers are reminded of the Grand Rapid Spur big Jim pairs that will be played on Sunday, 28 July, at 9am. Participants are invited to stay after bowls and enjoy Fred’s Sunday lunch.
