Concern at new squatter settlement on the Bluff

In terms of the law, it is too late to demolish the shacks.

The Bluff Ratepayers Association is highly concerned at the location of a new squatter settlement that has been in existence for several months and possibly longer, but which has not been officially noted nor monitored.

Ratepayer chairperson, Ivor Aylward, and former ward councillor Duncan Du Bois, visited the settlement, which is located in the bush below property number 85 Garcin Place in the Brighton Beach area. There are six shacks with an extension under construction on one of them.

According to a Garcin Place resident, the presence of this cluster of shacks was reported to ward councillor JP Prinsloo a while back. The Bluff Ratepayers takes exception to the fact that the existence of this settlement has been kept under the radar screen by the crime prevention forum (CPF) and the councillor. Why has transparency and accountability not been practised?

In terms of the law, it is too late to demolish the shacks. But their presence should have been openly acknowledged and their extent restricted by regular monitoring.

The proximity of this settlement to the upmarket residential properties in Garcin Place poses a serious threat not only to safety and security, but also to property values. The potential spread of that settlement across the hillside below Garcin Place is nothing short of alarming.
