#MandelaDay: Local army clean-up the Bluff

The event was initiated by Army Support Base KZN as an environmentally driven initiative for 67 minutes for Mandela.

MEMBERS from the Army Support Base KZN, Durban Solid Waste (DSW), the department of parks and recreation and the office of ward 66 councillor JP Prinsloo, rolled up their sleeves and picked up their rakes and shovels to clean-up a plot of land at the Bluff South African National Defence Force (SANDF) base, on Friday 19 July.

The event was initiated by Army Support Base KZN as an environmentally driven initiative for 67 minutes for Mandela. Communications officer of Army Support Base KZN, Major Musa Nhlumayo explained that the clean-up was part of their proactive approach to doing their bit for the community for Mandela Day. “We saw that this area needed some maintenance and decided to get up and do something about it. We are part of the society here and it’s important for us to be seen as such and not as an isolated group. We are a part of the Bluff and it’s important to keep it clean and safe,” he said.

Preston Chetty from DSW shared that they were more than willing to assist the local military force in making the day a success. “We often have environmental programmes on certain special days and this one of which where we decided to come out with members of the Army Support Base KZN to help clean up their area. We helped provide the resources needed to help ensure the success of this initiative as we are trying to instil a sense of responsibility to the environment while also doing our bit for 67 minutes for Mandela.

Prinsloo said: “It is great to work with all levels of government to ensure that we are active partners in the community. The Army Support Base KZN has led this initiative from the front and they have shown commitment to the Bluff community by trying to work on various projects with us from Adopt-A-Spot, to Mandela Day and even the tours we had during the Welcoming of the Whales Festival. They are always working with us to ensure that we are able to educate and improve our community and we are very proud of them being part of our on-going efforts and us on theirs.”
