Placement of Island View shack shop is illegal [LETTER]

The fact that the councillor is galled because he was not consulted as regards a trading licence is besides the point.

EDITOR – It beggars belief that neither the SUN reporter, Nothando Mthembu, nor ward 66 councillor Prinsloo have recognised that the primary issue concerning the shack shop in Island View Road is its placement, headlined ‘Island View street shop poses safety threat for all’ and dated 12 July in the Southlands Sun.

It is illegal to erect a structure on the road reserve. The fact that the councillor is galled because he was not consulted as regards a trading licence is besides the point. His primary objection should be to the placement of that structure.

Moreover, the road reserve at that point in Island View Road is no more than one and a half metres wide which means that customers at the shack shop would stand in the road to be served. The structure is also directly opposite the busy exit of the tank farm which adds to the potential congestion and safety factor.

The Bluff Ratepayers have no objection to informal trade provided that it is conducted within the bylaws which, in the case of the shack shop have been violated in terms of location and may also be suspect in terms of health regulations.
