Neglect is an example of failure [LETTER]

The bloated state of metro government in South Africa has failed ratepayers.

EDITOR – It is as a compassionate critic that I respond to councillor Prinsloo’s reaction to Ivor Aylward’s despair at the state of Kingfisher Park published in the Southlands Sun, dated 5 July.

Having experienced the role of ward councillor for 15 years in eThekwini Metro, frustration at the inability or unwillingness or sheer inertia of officialdom to act on requests is the worst part of being a councillor.

The sewage that finds its way into the Kingfisher upwelling is the result of storm water flowing into sewage piping in Worthing Avenue which then overflows. Sort that out and nature will prevail. Neglect of the park has, of course, encouraged anti-social activities since the area is perceived as a haven for such people.

The short term solution is to deal directly with Omesh Ori of Coastal Drainage. Workshops and action plans involving the South Durban ABM and ward committees are simply a revolving door of meetings and minutes which generate an impressive paper trail to nowhere. The long term solution is for Durban to revert to its pre-metro size so that focus and funding on issues like Kingfisher Park are addressed and resolved with alacrity. The bloated state of metro government in South Africa has failed ratepayers. The neglect of the Bluff show grounds is a first rate example of that failure.
