VIDEO: Man hijacked on Brighton Road

KZN SAPS' Capt Nqobile Gwala said Brighton Beach police were investigating a case of carjacking.

A MAN was hijacked outside a shop on Brighton Road on Monday morning, 1 July. A CCTV camera recorded the entire ordeal where the man, wearing a blue shirt, is seen standing and having a cigarette next to his car.

Possibly aware of the unidentified men approaching, he looks around a few times before taking a puff of his cigarette. Then suddenly, out of nowhere,  three men rush towards him and take his car key, open the car doors and try to put him at the back seat of his car. A fourth man approaches the scuffle.

The man in the blue shirt tries to get away but the unidentified men forcibly pull him inside the car. The hijackers eventually drive away, leaving the owner of the car behind.

The footage was posted on Facebook by Security Force with the caption reading: “Footage of a victim fighting off hijackers who tried to force him into his own vehicle this past Monday. The man managed to fight them off and luckily was unharmed. The vehicle was found later that day, in Isipingo, having been smashed. Any info on the suspects should be reported to SAPS Brighton Beach.”

Spokeswoman for KZN SAPS, Capt Nqobile Gwala confirmed the hijacking. “A case of carjacking was opened at Brighton Beach police station for investigation. The complainant alleged that on 1 July 2019 at 7.45am, he was seated in his parked vehicle on the roadside when he was accosted by four unknown men. At gunpoint, they robbed him of his vehicle and sped off. The vehicle was recovered on the same day in Isipingo.”
