Festival brings a ‘whale’ of a good time [PHOTOS]

Spirits were high and the beautiful weather made for a good family fun day in the sun.

FORESHORE Drive on the Bluff was abuzz with activity as Sodurba welcomed the whales at the weekend. The much-anticipated Welcoming of the Whales Street Festival, now in its third year running, brought out attendees in numbers to enjoy the day’s festivities in the sea breeze and warm sun.

This year’s celebrations started with the launching of Destiny Island on the corner of Gray’s Inn and Marine Drive on Wednesday, 26 June. Thursday, 27 June was the cheese and wine evening, hosted by East Coast Radio’s Damon Beard, guests nibbled and sipped as they enjoyed a fashion show and entertainment items. Saturday, 29 June was the street festival which saw the biggest turn out yet and the shut down of Foreshore Drive. And on Sunday, 30 June, guests enjoyed a tour of the old whaling station.

“The event went extremely well and we are getting a lot of positive feedback. I would like to thank everyone who helped put this together. There are so many but I need to mention the Sodurba Committee, CMH Kempster South and Khubs Tours for running the shuttle from Harlequins, Metro Police, and SAPS for their assistance and visibility,” said Helga du Preez of Sodurba Tourism Association.

Spirits were high and the beautiful weather made for a good sports day which was appreciated by the players and spectators. The sports side of the beach was a success with a range of codes. According to ward 66 concillor and sports organiser for the event, JP Prinsloo, more than 1 000 participants took part in five different sporting codes with teams from Durban and surrounds.

“I’d like to thank Mark Leathers from McNaught and Company attorneys for sponsoring all the medals and trophies, Bluff meat supply and Media Meats for the hotdogs that fed all of the participants and ward 66 ward committee chairperson for Sports Development, Chris van
Niekerk.

The Toti Rugby Club won the Rugga Whale Cup, Stella Soccer Club walked away with the Whale Fest Cup, L.A Flames Juniors and the All Star Males netball teams took home the Humpback Hoops Cup.

And while the festival gets bigger and better every year, so too will the sports line up. “We are planning to include even more codes of sports with the aim of having a week-long tournament with finals being hosted on the day of the festival,” said JP.

He added that they were currently in discussion with KZN Sports Development and eThekwini Sports Development department to make the beach sports tournament an annual sporting calendar event.
