Destiny ‘whale-comes’ KZN Whale Coast visitors

Launching Destiny Island is phase one of three, the next phase will be landscaping the plot and then finally adding on a sign and storyboard.

TO help usher in this year’s Welcoming of the Whales Street Festival, the corner of Gray’s Inn Road and Marine Drive at the Bluff is now home to Destiny the whale. The art piece installation was launched by Sodurba and its sponsors on Wednesday, 26 June.

Helga du Preez from Sodurba Tourism Association said the South Durban Community Tourism Association launched the Welcoming of the Whales Festival in 2017, and Robin Opperman from Umcebo Design had made a mascot for the festival.

“As we plan on having a bigger and better festival this year, we felt we needed a bigger and better whale! I approached sponsors including CMH Kempster South, Fabricon, Smartmatta, and Umcebo Design to help make this a reality, and Eden College got on board to help as well in collaboration with Robin and his team. I am quite amazed at how the community came together to support this initiative,” she said.

Ward 66 councillor, JP Prinsloo, who was at the launch thanked everyone involved who made the realisation of Destiny Island possible. “This will now be another point of attraction for the Bluff,” he said.

Residents are in for a whale of a time this weekend at the Welcoming of the Whales Street Festival on Foreshore Drive, Bluff. With a variety of activities for both young and old on offer and free entry, the day promises to be fun and educational.

The Welcoming of the Whales Street Festival is part of the tourism drive of the South Durban community tourism organisation, Sodurba. The tourism organisation is marketing the South Durban Basin as the Whale Coast with an emphasis on education, history, and entertainment to entice tourists to visit the area. The day kicks off at 9am on Saturday, 29 June with a complete road closure of Foreshore Drive.
