Accused granted R2000 bail for Wentworth murder

The victims sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital where the police officer died upon arrival.

A POLICE officer was shot dead and his friend seriously wounded following an altercation at the Ogle Road grounds in Wentworth on Sunday, 16 June.

A 35-year-old man accused of shooting the police officer identified as Warrant Officer Jody Fenner, was granted R2000 bail, following his court appearance on Wednesday, 19 June at the Durban Magistrate’s Court. It is alleged that hundreds of locals gathered at Ogle Road grounds for an event. However, later in the evening, an alteration broke out resulting in a gun fight. Provincial police spokesperson, colonel Thembeka Mbele, said the two people sustained gunshot wounds. Fenner was shot after he allegedly tried to stop a fight. Another male in his late 20s, believed to be his friend was also shot and injured. “The victims sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital where the police officer died upon arrival. Wentworth police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder,” Mbele said.

Jody was born in Eastwood Pietermaritzburg and would have celebrated his 29 birthday this August. “He became a police officer in 2014 and later received a promotion as warrant officer. Jody was a true peoples person and loved being around friends and family. He took pride in his looks, loved his cars and drag racing was his new hobby. He had no children and is survived by his sisters Janine and Jocelyn and his loving family. He will be sadly missed by everyone,” said Jody’s cousin, Mark Gokool.
