Yellowwood Park athlete aims to secure his second finish at the Comrades

Shane has competed in the ultimate human race seven times and looks forward to yet another exhilarating leg, following his intense training and a stricter diet than ever before.

AMPED for the upcoming 94th Comrades Marathon is Yellowwood Park Athletics Club’s very own Shane Govender, who will be going for his second finish this Sunday, 9 June.

Shane has competed in the ultimate human race seven times and looks forward to yet another exhilarating leg, following his intense training and a stricter diet than ever before. The 49-year-old has always loved running and competed in several marathon races before taking on the Comrades which he had initially anticipated would be easy to finish. “To be part of the whole Comrades experience is amazing, exciting, overwhelming and it only gets better each year. Preparations and training come easily to me with each year,” he said.

As the race draws closer Shane reflected on his past experiences on the track, from uphill battles to being cut-off at the 80km mark at Sherwood several times that he even jokingly considered buying a plot of land there. “However, I never let that deter me from achieving my goal, but instead I continued to persevere because it still made me a better and fitter person, mentally and physically. Last year, I decided to consult a sports doctor who put me on a stricter diet and tutored me mentally and I believe that was what was lacking before and I eventually completed for the first time last year in 11 hours and 44 minutes. Even the race I could also still run to my car and ran another 50km that week because I was feeling so great physically.”
Shane is at his peak at the moment and wakes up daily to run and defines it as one of his greatest passions. Although a challenging uphill race awaits him, he now looks forward to securing his back-to-back finish with the support of his loving and encouraging family.
