Sanele's older sister Gugu and younger brother Siyamthanda said their brother was a reserved and caring person.

A YELLOWWOOD Park family is mourning the tragic death of their beloved son, brother and father, Sanele Memela, who was brutally killed in a shooting outside his home on Monday night, 20 May.

Rescue Care Paramedics were called to the shooting incident and upon arrival, paramedics found community members trying to resuscitate him. “Advanced life support took over the resuscitation, although after half an hour of attempting to resuscitate the man, he was declared deceased due to the severity of his injuries. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body,” explained Garrith Jamieson of Rescue Care Paramedics.

KZN SAPS spokesperson Lt Colonel Zwane confirmed that the unknown suspects fled in their own getaway vehicle after the incident and that a case of murder has been opened at Montclair police station. Details leading up to the incident are currently unknown and are still being investigated by the police.

The family has been left to pick up the pieces with very little answers to what led to the traumatic experience that has robbed them of their loved one whom they described as quiet and compassionate.

His older sister Gugu and younger brother Siyamthanda said that Sanele was a reserved and caring person towards anyone and everyone. “He was often quiet and kept to himself but when he did voice his opinion on something it was always wise and valid. He enjoyed hosting people and helping people was his second nature. My brother would always go the extra mile,” said Siyamthanda.

The community of YWP has also been affected by the passing of Sanele and have flooded social media with heartfelt messages of condolences. One of the tenants, Leeann Amas who stays on Sanele’s property in a separate building, described him as more than just a landlord, but also as caring family friend. “My family and I have not only been left traumatised by this tragedy but have also lost a very close friend. Sanele went out of his way to make us feel welcomed in his home and he truly was a modest and quiet man. He never complained about anything. Work, gym and studying were his daily priority and my little ones had also grown fond of him. We have been shaken by this incident and the property is not the same without him, he will always have a special place in our hearts,” said Leeann.

Leeann Amas who stays on Sanele’s property as a tenant described Sanele as more than just a landlord, but also as caring family friend.

Sanele is survived by his four children and the Memela’s extend their gratitude to the YWP community for all their love and support during this tough time. “My wish is that the community remember him in a positive light and as a person who always looked out for others,” concluded a heartfelt Gugu.
