According to the secretary, Pat Vickers of St Francis Xavier Catholic Parish, who spoke to the SUN, most of those hurt suffered minor injuries, while four have remained behind in Egypt. Three of the four are being treated in hospital with one of them scheduled to undergo surgery, while one woman remained behind to be with her injured husband. “Twenty of the members, including the priest Michael Foley, returned back to South Africa on Monday, 20 May at the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. The other four members, who are still in Egypt, will be making their way back soon when they have received medical clearance. It is very unfortunate that what was started out as a holy pilgrimage had to end so tragically and a traumatic experience for innocent people,” she said.

Cllr Gumede added: “We appreciate the responsiveness of Minister Lindiwe Sisulu and our South African Ambassador to Egypt, Ambassador Vusi Mavimbela in dealing with the situation. We sympathise with the affected families and are available to offer assistance where required.”
