Municipal workers’ strike has come to an end

All parties have apologised to the public, residents and visitors who have suffered during this long impasse and committed to work together around the clock to normalise the situation.

LOCAL communities of wards 64 and 66, who have been experiencing issues with water shortages, sewage leaks, blocked drains and no refuse collection for over two weeks, can hope for some relief  following confirmation from the Bargaining Council that the municipal workers strike has come to an end.

According to a joint press statement by eThekwini Municipality and trade unions, the dispute which was discussed at the Bargaining Council by South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) and Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (IMATU) leadership of the eThekwini Municipality has been resolved amicably thus ending a two week long impasse which has unfortunately impacted negatively on the delivery of services to communities.

“It is good news that as of 7 May 2019, employees will go back to work and all the working equipment and tools of trade will be released, this includes the vehicles that have been impounded. Parties have overwhelmingly agreed that the disciplinary process must immediately ensue and perpetrators be brought to book without fear or favour. The employer is also committed to improve the conditions of employees in lower levels especially those in Grade 3 and Grade 4. It should also be noted that all parties have agreed to open up discussions on all issues affecting employees at the workplace and the employer has committed to prioritise and address issues affecting employees in the interest of service delivery,” said eThekwini Municipality spokesman Msawakhe Mayisela.
