Mowat Park family extends helping hand to cyclone victims

The items have been collected in loads over the past few weeks by Natal Mounted Rifles (NMR), who have been working to assist Cyclone Idai victims as part of their Sunshine project.

MOWAT Park High School was among the many local groups who did their part in collecting much-needed essentials for the victims of Cyclone Idai in Mozambique, last month.

Upon hearing about the devastation that left many injured and homeless, the school’s librarian Greta Butcher together with the rest of the school felt compelled to lend a helping hand to the many who have been directly affected by this ordeal. Greta said that the initiative came about after a former Mowat girl reached out on Facebook appealing to the public to assist her collecting some items such as water, blankets, clothing and non-perishable foods to donate to Mozambique and surrounding affected areas.

“The response from the girls was incredible, as they brought in large amounts of goods. We have had an average of two blankets per classroom from Grades 8 to 10. Even some of our girls who come from disadvantaged backgrounds did their bit. The items have been collected in loads over the past few weeks by Natal Mounted Rifles (NMR), who have been working to assist Cyclone Idai victims as part of their Sunshine project,” said Greta.
