Educational theatre company gets learners hooked on books

The Hooked on Books show is aimed at encouraging children to develop a love of reading.

THE idea that the love for books is fast dying in this day and age was proved to be null and void by the beaming faces of the learners of Woodlands Junior Primary, who were thrilled when they received a visit from Hooked on Books, on Tuesday, 9 April.

Hooked on Books is a touring educational theatre company that has been igniting a love of reading in children across South Africa for the past 25 years. Thabani Maphumulo, Sakhile Phuthini and Sbahle Sibiya of the KZN Hooked on Books team dramatised book trailers from contemporary children’s books. “I grew up enjoying reading books as a young boy and it’s amazing to see the children’s reactions when we narrate and perform for them. The book-trailers provide a visual, dramatic preview of the book similar to that of a movie trailer. By leaving the story at a nail-biting cliff-hanger we entice the learners to make a beeline for the library to find out how the story ends and encourage a love for reading,” said Thabani.

Learners Leslie Chipunga and Nataalia Van Vuuren volunteered to act as pirates in one of the stories.

“We try to encourage reading and the Hooked on Books show is an excellent way to promote a love of books. The children thoroughly enjoyed the interactive performance of snippets of contemporary children’s books. The show incorporated music, dance and drama which was exciting, humorous and appropriate for our young learners,” said Lilly Govender, Woodlands Junior Primary Departmental Head.
