CROW rescues and releases trapped Bush-buck

On arrival at CROW, the clinic nurses worked quickly to treat and free the ram.

On Wednesday, 3 April, the Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) received a call about a Bush-buck that needed to be rescued after it found itself stuck in a factory in the Queensmead area.

“A member of the public informed us that his staff managed to restrain the Bush-buck and tied its legs together in an attempt to prevent injury to both staff and animal. Immobilising an animal in this manner would not normally be advised but in this situation it was necessary as two staff members had already sustained minor injuries from the animal. If the Bush-buck had been left to run free the possibility of injuring itself further would have been greater due to the industrial nature of the area,” said CROW’s marketing and communications officer, Lana Bartholomew.

On arrival at CROW, the clinic nurses worked quickly to treat and free the ram. He was later placed into a large enclosure with plenty of cover to minimise any further stress on him. “Apart from a few superficial wounds, he was found to be in good health. If the staff at the factory did not respond as quickly as they did, the outcome could have been very different. Our sincere thanks to them,” said Bartholomew.

Bush-buck are known to be dangerous antelope when cornered/injured and the CROW staff advise that the public not attempt to catch such an animal as they can cause serious damage. Antelope are very susceptible to stress and can succumb to stress related complications. If you do come across an injured or displaced antelope, contact your nearest rehabilitation centre rather than intervening yourself. Always consider safety first.
