Fostering safer school environments

Brighton Beach police station recently hosted a school programme aimed at increasing awareness on crime among grade 8 learners.

Brighton Beach police station ran its back to school road safety programme from Friday, 11 January to Friday 18 January.
2019 marks the sixth year that Brighton Beach SAPS’ Captain Louise Le Roux hosts the pro-active safer schools crime initiative within the policing precinct. Entitled the ‘grade 8 crime induction programme’, the outreach aims to assist children by providing coping mechanisms to help with their transition.

“Other aspects in the programme included the facilitation of the child in conflict with law (Child Justice Act) and the dangerous weapons act,” explained Le Roux. “The transition from senior primary to high school can cause levels of anxiety to increase, as children have to cope with a new educational environment, educators, rules and the increased volume of work. Children were also taught that at the age of 10, a child has criminal capacity, and therefore has the ability to distinguish between right and wrong, and can thus be arrested when committing a crime.”

Six presentations were held with 996 learners and 38 educators attended. Learners were cautioned on items not permitted to be carried on their person or their belongings such as knives, firearms, toy guns, tasers, prescription medication, metal utensils, glass objects, illegal substances (drugs), alcohol, cigarettes, lighters and matches.

Learners were also cautioned on the use of cellphones on school premises, which becomes a crime generator.

Brighton Beach SAPS management thanked and extended its appreciation to schools governing bodies, principals and teachers for affording Capt Le Roux the platform to host the annual programme and for their hospitality during her visits. Cst Samkelisiwe Buthelezi is also acknowledged for her support during the presentations.
