Care for your Afro with these simple tips

Here are some simple tips and tricks to help you keep your natural Afro looking and feeling its best.

Start afresh

If your hair has been relaxed in the last year, consider trimming off the treated ends so you can start afresh. Relaxed hair doesn’t respond well to being left in its natural state. Cutting the relaxed ends will allow your Afro to grow optimally and it won’t need to be treated as often.

Get a treatment

Visit your hairdresser for a treatment. Ask for a scalp-healing treatment that won’t damage your natural hair. Starting your Afro journey with a treatment will help your hair bind and not get as knotty as it would without a treatment. Products containing olive oil, shea butter or coconut work best.

Invest in an Afro Comb

Buying an Afro comb is not as easy as you might think. When choosing the one that will work best for you, you have to consider the texture of your hair. If you have soft, loose hair, opt for a softer, less rigid comb. If you have tough, thick hair, invest in a strong and harder comb that won’t break.

Use natural products

Using natural-based products like olive oil, coconut oil, shea butter or avocado oil will give the best results for natural Afros. Not only do these products provide great nutrients for your hair, but they also treat the scalp and skin in general.

Don’t forget to prep before bed

If you want your Afro to be fresh every morning, you’ll have to put in the work the night before. Part your hair in four equal sections and make four equal box braids. Follow through with your moisturiser of choice to nourish the braids and secure the curls. When you wake up in the morning, all you need to do is unplait the braids and comb through with your Afro comb, and you’re ready to go.
