Merebank house robbery conviction lauded

Detective Const Zulu and Sergeant Shaun McFall were commended by Wentworth SAPS station management.

WENTWORTH SAPS Detective Constable Bhekisisa Zulu has been lauded, following his hard work in a house robbery investigation, where his successful investigation led to the culprit’s eight-year conviction.

A robbery incident took place on 11 April 2018 in Chenab Road, Merebank.
A man was caught after he held two people at knifepoint, took their valuables and fled the premises. Durban Flying Squad Sergeant Shaun McFall was alerted by the screams of women while he patrolled the area on Chenab Road. McFall noticed a man inside the yard and gave chase as he ran down Howrah Road and entered an open gate on Burdwen Road. McFall, who was alone in his pursuit, eventually effected the arrest while the criminal was still in possession of the knife.

“The 18-year-old suspect was arrested and was positively identified by the complainant, before being detained at SAPS Wentworth. The case docked was assigned to Detective Cst Zulu for investigation, who attended court proceedings in mid-May 2018 at Durban Magistrates Court. He successfully opposed bail in this house robbery,” explained Wentworth SAPS spokesman, Captain Mbuso Gumede.

The accused remained in Westville prison from the date of his arrest until he was convicted on 20 February in Durban Magistrates Court. The accused was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment.

Gumede said: “We hope this serves as a lesson to others who are planning to commit such crimes in our community, that the police and justice will view their actions in a harsh light and will not be lenient when sentencing them.” Detective Const Zulu and Sergeant Shaun McFall were commended by Wentworth SAPS station management.
