Warren’s Small World – Lynx spider

The Lynx spider is considered harmless to humans and these little spiders are your friends in the garden, helping to reduce the numbers of pests.

THE Lynx spider is a common species of Spider found in the Durban area.

They are often seen scurrying around on small plants and shrubs, where they are usually either in the pursuit of prey or avoiding becoming prey.

The Lynx spider is named after the cat because of their amazing hunting abilities. Some can jump a couple of centimetres in the air to catch their prey in full flight.

These spiders are usually quite small with a maximum length of around 2cm, although I seldom see them that big. They are easily recognisable by the spines present on their legs. They can vary dramatically in colour but the most common colours I see are green, white, brown and orange.

The Lynx spider does not make a web, however they use silk as a safety line when jumping and also to anchor their egg sac.

The mother spider will guard her eggs until they hatch, during this period she does not eat and sadly she dies soon after her babies are born.
