YWP WI gains insights about guide dogs for the blind

Fortunately YWP WI was able to make a donation to this association.

YELLOWWOOD Park Women’s Institute’s meeting opened with a surprise, as Enid the guide dog arrived promptly on time with her handler Joe Garret.

President Sharon Quail formally opened the meeting with a prayer and welcome to all members and special thoughts to those not present.

The minutes, correspondence and finance were taken as read with a reminder that fees are now due and then it was on with the speaker of the evening. Ane Roux from the Guide Dogs Association gave an informative and interesting talk on the amazing work of the association. She explained how long it takes from breeding a puppy to be able to hand over the trained dog to its new handler. Each dog is assessed from the puppy stage. Some will make it and others not, but the training is intense and very expensive and help by way of donations is always appreciated and needed.

An important point made is that if you see a dog with his handler, never pat or distract the dog from its duties.

Fortunately YWP WI was able to make a donation to this association. Apparently there are many people on the waiting list for a dog.

After a delicious tea, it was on with the meeting. Members are reminded of the AGM next month and are asked to give it some thought. Many thanks to Daleen who is taking over the ‘this and that’ table and thanks again to Alida and to Marietjie who is going to assist with the tea. How wonderful it was to see the many ecobricks which were filled by members – keep up the good work. Birthdays were read out and Linda Melson gave some competition tips. The raffles was drawn and results of the competition’s read out by Robyn Murray. The enjoyable evening closed with a prayer and wishes for members to stay well and go safe.
