Brighton Beach officer plays his part in upholding the law

Community members are urged to work with the South African Police Service to stop the illegal trade in second-hand goods and non-ferrous metals.

In keeping with his duty to uphold the law, designated second-hand goods officer of Brighton Beach SAPS, Warrant Officer Anton van der Merwe is on a mission to tackle the contravention of the SHG Act.

Van der Merwe issued 12 written warnings in terms of section 28 (2) of the Second-Hand Goods Act (Act 6 of 2009) to various registered second-hand goods businesses for contravening the SHG Act (Act 6 of 2009) during January and February 2019.

Other successes include the execution of a search and seizure warrant on a premises within the Bluff, by van der Merwe and Captain Sarel Kruger, which resulted in the arrest of an adult man, seizure of property, and the accused being charged for contravening the Second-Hand Goods Act (Act 6 of 2009). Six written warnings were also issued to registered second- hand goods business owners or employees for contravening the SHG Act (Act 6 of 2009) during February 2019.

Brighton Beach spokesperson Captain Louise Le Roux also said that a written notice to appear in court was also issued against the owner of a panel beating business, situated on Jacobs Road in Clairwood for failing to comply with the provisions of Section 21 of the Second-Hand Goods Act (Act 6 of 2009).

SAPS, Brighton Beach Management commends Warrant Officer Van Der Merwe and Captain Sarel Kruger on the arrest, and Warrant Officer Van Der Merwe for the outcomes achieved through his law-enforcement initiative.
