WATCH: Brazen wig theft from Durban motorist

A BLUFF woman's drive home from work turned into a harrowing experience as she witnessed another motorist's wig being snatched from her head

A BLUFF woman’s drive home from work turned into a harrowing experience as she witnessed another motorist’s wig being snatched from her head while they were both stuck in traffic.

Traffic had stopped at the robot on Solomon Mahlangu (ex-Edwin Swales Drive) under the M4 southern freeway bridge on Tuesday, 19 February.

Charlene Cross’s dashcam footage of the incident shows a man jogs along towards the car before he reaches into the open window and snatches the hair from the woman motorist’s head.

When Charlene posted the footage online, it went viral with countless shares on Durban Facebook groups but for Cross, it was a shock to witness the brazen theft. “It happened too quickly and there wasn’t time to react and stop him. He was gone,” said Cross. The first thing that went through her mind was to help the woman, who was in a traumatised state. “Helping her was the least I could do. I tried to make sure she was okay, which she wasn’t. She was in a state of shock, couldn’t talk and was crying and shaking. Her scalp was injured and sore from where the clips ripped out, as a result of him pulling it so violently,” she said.

Cross warned women to always drive with their windows closed, especially when stopping at robots. “Crimes like these have happened before on this road. The last time it was a cellphone taken from a car. We need to be wary of our surroundings and who is around us at all times,” she added.

Cross was unsure of whether the woman reported the crime to police.
The wig snatching victim is extremely grateful for the support from Cross and is recovering from the traumatising experience.
