BREAKING NEWS: Abalone worth R70,000 seized in Durban CBD

Police and other relevant departments seized a total estimated value of R72 840 of abalone in West Street, Durban.

A 28-year-old man was arrested at a Durban CBD business premises for possession of abalone, line fish, East Coast rock lobster, oysters, mussels, langoustines, crabs and prawns.

 

An Operation Phakisa raid conducted at about noon on Thursday, 21 February in West Street, Durban saw police seize seafood with an estimated value of R86,000 seized.

 

“The raid was conducted by SAPS, SARS, Customs, Immigration Officers and Department of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries. A search was also conducted at another shop where more abalone was recovered. They were found packed inside a fridge at the business premises. The total estimated value of the recovered abalone is R72 840,” explained KZN police spokesman Captain Nqobile Gwala.

 
She said the suspect will be charged in terms of the Marine and Living Resources Act, and is expected to appear in Durban Magistrates’ Court today (Friday, 22 February).
