Special guests from CROW were present at Natalia Garden Club's first meeting of the year to speak about garden birds.

Natalia Garden Club on the Bluff recently met up for its first meeting of 2019 at Durban Pigeon Racing Club, on Thursday, 14 February.

Club president Karolina Kotze led the meeting which comprised of 70 members, and reflected on the club’s achievements of last year, which included planting a lovely garden in Wentworth, donating food to John Dunn House during the festive season and donating half of the club’s proceeds to the Bluff Methodist Church schools feeding scheme.

Special guests Lana Bartholomew and Sue-anne Shutte from the Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) were also present to speak about garden birds. Shutte spoke about the most common garden birds, and gave information on the birds’ characteristics and what they eat. The two women encouraged members to plant indigenous plants in their gardens to attract birds into the garden naturally, without having to place bird feeders.

Shutte also spoke about how domesticated cats are harmful to birds and suggested building a cattery, which will draw birds to one’s garden. The aim of the club is to promote and encourage the introduction and cultivation of plants, flowers, fruits and vegetables, and to advance and improve the art of gardening and floral decoration. Kotze said the love for nature and plants is what continues to bring all members together, even after 33 years. She encourages new members to join the club as many members have retired.
