Durban hundred-year-old cites clean living as reason for longevity

At a 100-years-old, Ma Alice never lets anything stand in her way

A FORMER Wentworth granny celebrated her 100th birthday on Monday, 11 February surrounded by her family at her Newlands home.

Alice Gaillard Fernandez or ‘Ma’ as her family calls her, is a wonderful spirit and devout Catholic from the Holy Family parish.

“She cracks us up with her jokes and has a memory to rival many. She’s a graceful lady, our queen,” said granddaughter Glendell Ghairunisa Walljee.

Alice’s family consists of five children, two of whom have died, 18 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. Her love for her family fueled her passion for cooking and Alice spent many hours baking for her children who especially appreciate her delicious meat pies. “Up until today, cooking is still her passion. Growing up, I remember how we kept her on her toes and she was always agile,” added Glendell.

Her family attribute her longevity to her faith and love for her family, as well as her choice to lead a natural, clean life. “She has never dyed her hair or painted her nails, smoked or drank alcohol, she was and is still a natural beauty,” giggled her granddaughter.

At a 100-years-old, Ma Alice never lets anything stand in her way, not even a stroke she suffered six months ago. “Through God’s grace and her determination, she is back on her feet and back to being her jovial self,” said Glendell.

Her family and friends wish her a happy birthday.
