YWP WI learns about eco bricks

These bricks are actually made from two-litre plastic bottles filled to the very brim with plastic.

YELLOWWOOD Park Women’s Institute president and executive member Sharon Quail opened the first meeting of the year with the WI prayer and a big welcome to all members and visitors.

Special thoughts and prayers go out to those members who could not join in.

They are all constantly in everyone’s thoughts. The minutes were taken as read and there was no correspondence. Many thanks to members who assisted in the Christmas party. The finances are all in order and a reminder that fees are now due. Talk to the treasurer if there is a problem. Congratulations to members’ grandchildren who have all started off the new year very well.

The AGM will be held in March and YWPWI is looking for a new committee member. As usual, the WI will be fundraising during the year but unfortunately it is going to lose Alida Pegram, who has assisted so much in the past. Duties and competitions were read out and advice given by judge Linda Melson.

After a delicious tea, it was over to Sheila Phlogene who gave a most interesting talk and demonstration on the making of eco bricks. These bricks are actually made from two-litre plastic bottles filled to the very brim with plastic. The plastic must be inserted and filled to the top without movement. These bricks are now being used to build walls and kennels but it is vital that the plastic in the bottle is filled to the brim and compacted very well.

The raffles were drawn and won by one of the visitors and then vice president Robyn Murray gave the competition results.

The meeting closed with the WI prayer and as usual, the wish that all go well, stay safe and be aware.
