Legendary Cave Rock turtle’s death saddens Bluff beachgoers

Do you have any memories or stories about the old Cave Rock turtle?

The death of the legendary Cave Rock turtle has left a void in the hearts of many Bluff surfers and beachgoers who have over the years spotted the old girl catching waves alongside them.

Her lifeless body was spotted by local surfer and photographer, Darren Simes and his friend this morning after finding out from their friend about the turtle’s death the day before.

“The turtle was quite popular with local surfers on the Bluff. She often popped her head out of the water briefly as to say hello and disappear. Sometimes she would appear on the surfer’s waves, looking like an exposed rock and scare the crap out of them,” said the surfer.

Simes who surfs every morning on the beach has had his fair share of sighting of the years and to discover the creature already dead was heartbreaking to see. “She is a legend with many Bluff watermen and her odd hello’s and “scare you death” encounters will be missed by many,” said Simes.

Knowing that this gentle creature was in the water with him while he surfed gave Simes a great sense of calm.  “It was awesome. I felt part of nature and the sea. Some watch National Geographic. On the Bluff we get to see them in real life. Stuff like this you won’t see at town beaches. Quite a unique experience,” he added.
