I ate weevils- will I be okay?

We are all familiar with those dreaded little black specks in the freshly cooked pasta...here's what happens if we accidentally eat them.

Weevils are small beetles that feed on plants, especially grains such as flour, cornmeal and cereals. Weevils don’t make their way into sealed packages; they are already in the food as eggs.

Weevils, whether in larval or adult stage, are not harmful to humans or animals, in fact, weevils in your food determine whether there is any residue from pesticides in the grains. If you find dead weevils in a packet of grains, you know that pesticides are present.

If there are a lot of weevils and you can’t tolerate the thought of consuming them, here are a couple of tricks to get rid of them…

  1. Weevils tend to float, so cover the grain with water and wait for them to float to the surface.  Remove weevils.
  2. Spread the grain out in the sun, stir a couple of times to make sure they are all exposed. Weevils don’t like sunlight and will leave on their own.
  3. If they still persist, you can place the grain in the freezer. This should kill them.
  4. If you accidentally happen to cook some weevils, just serve as normal and tell your family it’s coarse black pepper *jokes*

Just remember eating weevils won’t hurt you, in fact if you eat 100 grams of weevils it will net you approximately 6.7 grams of protein.
