Man drowns after being sucked under Isipingo beach pipeline

Paramedics continued resuscitation efforts when they arrived, but the man was declared dead an hour later.

NEW Year’s Day, 1 January started in tragedy, when a 30-year-old man drowned after he was swept away by the undertow after he jumped off a pipeline at Reunion Park Beach in Isipingo.

KZN police media spokesman Lt Col Thulani Zwane explained that at about 11.30am, Durban SAPS search and rescue team members retrieved the body of a 30-year-old man under the pipe who had allegedly drowned.

He said the man had been sucked beneath the pipe by a surge after he jumped off the pipe into the sea.

Another SAPS spokesman, Colonel Thembeka Mbele further explained the man’s friends pulled him from the water and started CPR. Paramedics continued resuscitation efforts on their arrival, but the man was declared dead an hour later.

The man’s body was handed to Isipingo police and an inquest docket was opened at Isipingo police station for investigation.
