Getting a job after matric

Tips to consider when looking for a job after completing school

It’s an exciting time as thousands of matriculants received their final results today (4 January 2019), and although many will embark on the journey of furthering their studies, those who have not received a university exemption, or don’t plan to study at a tertiary institution, the process of deciding where to look for a job will begin.

There are a number of important points to remember when applying for a job, especially for the first time.

The first priority is to ensure that you have a competently compiled CV with all the relevant details, such as educational qualifications, any work experience, personality strengths, aspirations and personal contact information. Today the CV needs to be highly focused and customized to the position applied for. Also always ensure you always have copies of important documentation like certificates, identification documents, letter of recommendation or other back up material for an interview.

Doing research on a company before being interviewed by them, can be a real advantage to the candidate. Apart from being impressed by the effort that you as a candidate, have made, it also shows that there is a genuine interest in knowing about the business ethos, the hierarchy, the nature of the industry they are in, competitors etc.

Going through a reputable recruitment company is one of the best options, as these businesses focus entirely on finding suitable positions for the right candidates. They also have a good relationship with client companies, who are looking for staff and they have a solid database of candidates, who can be matched to those positions.

Internships also have major benefits such as getting a feel for the working world, bridging the theoretical/practical divide, and working within a structured company environment with a mentoring mentality. Internships can also be a means of securing permanent employment with a particular company of choice that might otherwise have been out of reach. It’s an initial opportunity to impress the company with one’s ability, work ethic and to befriend decision makers.

As a candidate, you should be properly prepared to go into every interview with three to five key selling points in mind, such as what makes you the best candidate for the position in relation to the responsibilities of the vacancy. Remember, no one likes a complainer, so don’t dwell on negative experiences during an interview or interaction with a prospective employer.

Looking for a job may be a daunting task for some, but maintaining a positive attitude throughout the journey as well as being well informed about the industry you apply to, will go along way in securing the job that is just right for you.
