Foods diabetics should avoid

The first step to a healthy lifestyle is your diet.

For those who are diagnosed with diabetes, they believe that it is a life sentence of sickness and despair but that is a myth. With the correct diet, a good workout plan and always sticking to your medication, diabetes can become a lifestyle for a person and force them to live a healthier life.

The first step to a healthy lifestyle is your diet and many people don’t know that there are many food items that could be detriment to your health and aggravate the diabetes.

There is more than one type of diabetes:

  • Type 2 diabetes

A chronic condition that affects the way the body processes blood sugar (glucose).
  • Type 1 diabetes

A chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin.
  • Prediabetes

A condition in which blood sugar is high, but not high enough to be type 2 diabetes.
  • Gestational diabetes

A form of high blood sugar affecting pregnant women.

FOODS TO AVOID:

Sugar-sweetened beverages: This includes cokes, ice-teas and any drink that has sugar in it.

White bread, pasta and rice: Eating bread and other refined-flour foods has been shown to significantly increase blood sugar levels in people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes

Trans fats: Trans fats are found in margarines, peanut butter, spreads, creamers and frozen dinners. In addition, food manufacturers often add them to crackers, muffins and other baked goods to help extend shelf life.

Fruit-flavoured yogurt: A one-cup (245-gram) serving of fruit-flavoured yogurt may contain 47 grams of sugar, meaning nearly 81 per cent of its calories come from sugar (23).

Fruit juice: Although this is viewed by many as a healthy choice, its effects on blood sugar are actually similar to those of sodas and other sugary drinks. This goes for unsweetened 100 per cent fruit juice, as well as types that contain added sugar. In some cases, fruit juice is even higher in sugar and carbs than soda.
